Cold plunge / cold-water immersion
On ThriveHop, cold plunge means a tub of cold water at a gym, spa, or recovery studio. Research papers usually call this cold-water immersion (CWI): sitting or standing in water cooler than about 15 °C after exercise. That is not the same as a whole-body cryotherapy chamber of dry air below −100 °C.

What the papers measured
The strongest human literature is about delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise, not longevity, immunity, or treating disease. Protocols in those trials (water temperature, time, how much of the body is immersed) are not the same as a listed venue’s tub.

Some evidence for less muscle soreness versus sitting still
Cochrane systematic review of small RCTs and quasi-RCTs
A 2012 Cochrane review of 17 small trials (366 people) found some evidence that cold-water immersion after exercise reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness compared with passive rest. Effects were statistically significant at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours in pooled analyses, but results were heterogeneous. The authors said there was insufficient evidence for other outcomes, and most trials did not actively watch for predefined adverse events.
Limitation. Study quality was low. Temperature, duration, and exercise type varied. This is not evidence that a studio plunge treats injury or disease.

Dose in those recovery trials, not a ThriveHop protocol
Systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs
A 2016 Sports Medicine meta-analysis of nine RCTs comparing CWI with passive recovery reported a small benefit for muscle soreness. Among those trials, water between about 11–15 °C and immersion of about 11–15 minutes showed the largest differences versus rest. That describes the pooled trial protocols. It is not medical advice and not a session plan for a listed venue.
Limitation. Nine studies. The authors called the overall benefit slight. Individual gyms set their own water temperature.

Regular post-lift ice baths can blunt strength gains
Human RCT plus biopsy signalling study
In a human randomized study, 21 men strength-trained twice a week for 12 weeks. After each session they used either 10 minutes of CWI or active recovery. Strength and muscle mass increased more with active recovery. Type II fibre area and myonuclei per fibre increased in the active-recovery group, not the CWI group. A companion biopsy study found weaker hypertrophy signalling after CWI. The authors wrote that using CWI as a regular post-exercise recovery strategy should be reconsidered if the goal is muscle growth.
Limitation. Young, physically active men. This argues against marketing ice baths as universally “anabolic” or “recovery for hypertrophy.”

Cold water is a hazard as well as a research tool
Narrative physiology review
Tipton and colleagues reviewed CWI as both a threat and a treatment. They cover drowning, cardiac arrest, and hypothermia, as well as proposed uses such as cooling heat casualties. They conclude that the evidence base for popular claims is mixed, and that some inflammation-related claims remain at the level of anecdotal speculation.
Limitation. Not a trial of gym plunges. Sudden cold-water immersion can stress the heart and lungs. ThriveHop does not tell you whether plunging is safe for you.

- A session at a listed gym is not a medical treatment for inflammation, depression, or metabolic disease.
- Cochrane and sports-medicine reviews of CWI are not a prescription for how long you should stay in a plunge.
- Open-water swimming, ice baths after lifting, and studio plunges are different exposures.
